Andy Astle - City Music Services Guitar TutorI took up the guitar when I was twelve years old. After basic lessons from a family friend I attended a course of formal classical guitar lessons at my local music school.

Although initially an acoustic guitarist, my formative influences were electric players, notably Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and Robert Fripp. More recently I have become interested in the music and improvisational approach of New York based guitarist Wayne Krantz.

I have over the years developed fingerstyle and plectrum based approaches to both acoustic and electric instruments. I am particularly interested in the possibilities of the amplified acoustic guitar as a 'lead' instrument, and in the development of the electro-acoustic guitar as an instrument in its own right.

My solo performance and recording work exists in the 'left-field' hinterland between the worlds of singer-songwriter, performance poet and instrumentalist.

Prior to my solo work I was involved in other art and music projects, most notably 'Bronte Brothers' performance art group. 'Other People' with Dave Ball of 'Soft Cell' and 'The Grid'.
I am a founding member of 'The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain'.

I have a professional history in theatre work as a sound designer/ operator and composer and performer of live soundtracks. I have played at many of London's 'acoustic' venues: Bunjies Folk Cellar, The Troubadour, The Kashmir Klub, P.J. Fahey's Ructions, Blackheath Concert Halls and also The Queen Elizabeth Hall as a member of Rhys Chatham's 101 Electric Guitars ensemble. I have played at Ronnie Scott's club with the U.O.G.B. My solo CDs have been played on B.B.C. Radio 3's 'Late Junction'. I have also played and taken part in programmes on B.B.C. Radio 1, 2, 3, & 4 with TV appearances here and in the U.S. and Canada along the way.

Whilst continuing to earn a living as a player and performer I also engage in private instrumental study with Shaun Baxter.

In addition to the guitar I play the banjo, ukulele, taropatch and tiple.
