Deborah HawksleyI was born in Singapore and grew up in East Yorkshire! My mother was determined that I wouldn't speak with a Hull accent, and I was sent for elocution lessons from an early age. And so began my passion for the spoken word. I am a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music where my principal study was voice. I am also a Registered General Nurse, having trained at the Middlesex Hospital in Central London. After winning the prestigious Gold Medal for my year, I returned to music and studied Opera at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I have considerable performing experience in spoken dialogue, most notably at The Coliseum for English National Opera, and at the Savoy Theatre for The D'Oyly Carte. My interest in teaching began eight years ago; at a fundamental level I believe that successful communication comes from dynamic breath energy and a passion for the message. I use a combination of breath and postural awareness together with exercises to strengthen articulation and give variety and colour to the voice. The sessions are, I hope, both informative and fun.

Public speaking and presentation can be both exhilarating and nerve- racking, and just a little technical 'know-how' gives a huge boost to all important confidence.
